Asil
Meet Asil, our hero!
We will never forget the moment we got these horrible pictures of a horse lying on its side, bleeding all over, with wounds covering his entire body. A lifeless skeleton that didn't even resemble a horse anymore. Asil used to be a children's riding horse. He became so severely malnourished that he finally collapsed.
We named him Asil after the girl who fought to rescue him. We admitted Asil to the hospital, where he stayed for several weeks until he gained some strength.
His rehabilitation was long and complicated, both physically and mentally. In addition to being extremely underweight and having multiple injuries, tests revealed a severe liver infection, which prevented him from gaining weight and getting stronger. His condition was so severe that for a long time, we were sure he would not survive. The first weeks were terrifying and frustrating. Asil kept losing weight despite the highly enriched diet and the treatments he received.
Every 48 hours, we did blood tests, looking for another clue to help us not give up on such a young horse, only six years old. We were not ready to lose him. Every day, we would get him to stand using a harness and a tractor. Our greatest fear was that his legs would not support his weight while lifting him and he would no longer want to accept our help. If he were to give up, we would have nothing more to do. We would have to give up on him. But as long as he kept fighting for his life, we were fighting with him!
Every day, Michal, the shelter's medical staff manager, read articles, researched, and searched for the best diet for a thin horse that hadn't eaten in weeks. Despite numerous theories, Michal developed the most appropriate formula! The improvement was evident daily, and Asil did not disappoint us. Every time we offered him help, he would accept it willingly, which only increased our efforts.
Asil, it turned out, was much stronger than we had ever imagined! After two months of daily battles for his life, one clear day, Asil's strength shone through. He managed to get up on his feet alone, a moment that none of us will ever forget! Who would have thought...
Today, Asil is one of our herd of rehabilitated horses, living a life of freedom and happiness. He is a free, beautiful horse, grateful to be alive and enjoying every moment of his new lease on life.
